Lensa is five-year-old girl with a shy smile. She lives with her mother in a one-room house in southern Kenya. Her mother works a subsistence farmer.
Lensa was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, which is a condition where excess fluid causes her brain to swell. This has delayed her development and could affect Lensa’s vision and cause brain damage. Lensa’s mother took her to the hospital to receive treatment but was unable to afford the numerous scans needed to treat her condition.
An acquaintance advised Lensa’s mother to visit BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital, a Watsi care center, with a promise that Lensa would get treatment. Now, Lensa needs $685 to fund a shunt procedure, which will relieve pressure from fluid buildup in her brain and help her symptoms. Lensa’s mother looks forward to her daughter’s treatment, scheduled for July 24.
