Mom is a 72-year-old retired fish seller from Cambodia. She has three sons, four daughters, and ten grandchildren. She lives with her husband, who is a retired soldier. At home, she enjoys listening to monks pray on the radio and caring for her grandchildren.
One year ago, Mom developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her to experience eye tearing and blurry vision, both of which have disrupted her eyesight. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Mom learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On August 3rd, doctors will perform cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Mom says, “I hope after surgery I can see better, go outside by myself, and do housework.”

Mom underwent cataract surgery so she can see clearly again.
Mom knew of our medical partner CSC from a relative who had surgery, so she had the confidence that she would get good care. After surgery, she stayed in the hospital until surgeons were sure she was stable, and then she was able to return home. She will apply eye drops eight times a day to reduce the chance of infection, and keep water away from her eye for at least a week. She looks forward to caring for her many grandchildren and visiting her local pagoda for ceremonies again.
Mom’s daughter said: “my mother was very unhappy that she could not go outside or visit the family because she could not see to travel alone. I am relieved she can have her life back and do the things she likes to do. She can be out in the bright light outside without help and is no longer worried she will fall. Thank you for your kindness so she can have a peaceful life with her family and feel useful.”
