Maria is 45-year-old mother of nine. Her children range from age 10 to 25. She works to take care of her kids and her home, but lately pain and bleeding have prevented her from keeping to her daily routine.
Maria needs a colposcopy to examine and remove abnormal cells found in her uterus. However, access to the exam and resulting follow-up care is not common, especially in rural indigenous communities. Luckily, our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, will provide the procedure for Maria. Her treatment is scheduled on February 13.
Surgeons will remove abnormal areas and identify the severity of the cancerous and precancerous cells. This exam is expensive and requires her to travel to Guatemala City. Therefore, Wuqu’ Kawoq is requesting $218 to help fund her procedure.
If all cancerous or precancerous areas are removed during the colposcopy, Maria will be able to return to her normal life. She will be able to spend time with her children and grandchildren, attend church, and be a leader in her community. If she does indeed need further treatment, she will have the support of our medical partner’s team to help her through the process.
