Lam is an 80-year-old widow with two daughters, four sons, and 14 active grandchildren. Sadly, her husband died many years ago. Now, she lives with her youngest daughter who works as a farmer.
Five years ago, Lam developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and sensitivity to light. It is difficult for her to perform daily activities, like eating or walking, because she only sees shadows.
When Lam learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled there hoping to find treatment. On December 13th, doctors will perform small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Lam shared, “I hope my eye gets better. I want to be independent and visit the pagoda by myself. I don’t want to be a burden to my family.”

Lam underwent cataract surgery and can regain her independence.
Lam traveled with her daughter to our medical partner Children’s Surgical Center to have her cataract surgery, with the hope that she would have better vision. When the surgeons discharged her the next day, she was thrilled that she could recognize faces and see bright colors. She will rest for a few days at home while she heals and after her eye heals completely, she can be more independent and go places by herself. She looks forward to visiting with her grandchildren and cooking for them.
Lam’s daughter said: “we’re happy that my mother will see well again, and won’t have to stay inside. It was very hard for her to be alone after my father died. Now she can walk outside and not be afraid she will fall. She can visit the village pagoda to pray with the monks like she likes to do. Thank you for helping my mother.”
