Phat is a 68-year-old monk from Kampong Thom province in Cambodia. He is married and has two daughters and three sons, as well as 15 grandchildren. In his daily life as a monk, Phat enjoys reading Buddhist books and participating in religious ceremonies.
About one year ago, Phat developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Phat has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he cannot go places on his own.
When Phat learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Center (CSC), he traveled for three hours to seek treatment. On April 1st, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, Phat will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $263 to fund this procedure.
Phat shared his hopes that, after the surgery, his eyesight will improve significantly so that he can see more clearly, recognize others easily, and travel to distant places without difficulty. Most importantly, he wishes to continue joining ceremonies and reading Buddhist texts comfortably, which will allow him to maintain his spiritual practices and daily routine.
