Meet Cesar, a nine-month old baby boy from Guatemala. Cesar lives with his parents and three siblings. His older siblings often care for him while his parents work to support the family.
Cesar is malnourished and “his weight and height for his age are far below the average,” shares our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK). He has a weak immune system and is battling a fever and cough. Along with this immediate symptoms, “he is at risk of permanent physical and mental stunting.”
“Without intervention,” WK adds, “he will face the long-term effects of malnutrition and his health will continue to decline.” Cesar’s family wants to provide for him, but doesn’t have the resources or tools necessary to do so.
For $535, Cesar will receive nutritional supplements and medication to fight his current symptoms and recoup his lost weight and height. His parents will also receive nutritional education to make sure his progress is sustained.
“This intervention will prevent Cesar from suffering from the long term effects of malnutrition,” says WK. “His immune system will strengthen, allowing him to better combat infections and illness throughout his life.”
“Thank you for coming to us and for wanting to help,” shares Cesar’s mother. “I can hardly believe it. Thank you.”

Cesar received treatment for acute malnutrition.
Since our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK) began Cesar’s treatment, he has been improving and recovering from malnutrition. “Both his height and weight have been increasing steadily, following a positive growth trajectory,” shares WK. “Since providing his mother with beans, eggs, and a fortified corn drink, Cesar’s diet is now far more varied and nutritious. He now has a much bigger appetite, helping him grow and have much more energy,” WK continues. “His mom is pleased with how much more he is eating since he started receiving treatment.”
Although the last time WK visited Cesar in his home he had diarrhea, their clinical team responded quickly and he is now on the road to recovery. He now can play for much longer and keep up with his three siblings, which stimulates his physical and mental development. With continued treatment and monitoring, Cesar will continue to grow and develop healthily.
“My son is now eating more thanks to the food that you have provided. I appreciate the foods that we are receiving, so I can give my son a better diet,” expresses Cesar’s mother.
