Meet Naw Kee, a 15-year-old girl living in Burma with her parents. “Naw Kee enjoys singing in the church and goes every week. She likes painting in her spare time as well. She can read and write in Burmese and Karen,” shares our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP).
Naw Kee has thalassemia, which is an inherited blood disorder characterized by an abnormal formation of hemoglobin. “Currently Naw Kee has a swollen abdomen and doesn’t have a very good appetite,” BBP explains. Her condition has also caused stunted growth.
Additionally, Naw Kee has back pains and experiences heart palpitations. The jugular vein in her neck visibly pulsates through her skin as her heart has to work over-time to pump the thin blood through her body. If left untreated, Naw Kee risks deteriorating health and possible death.
$1,015 covers the cost of a necessary splenectomy – a surgical procedure to remove her spleen. “Naw Kee will be on medication for life following her surgery but should have a better quality of life if she stays on medication,” BBP explains. “Naw Kee hopes to return to school as soon as she is well enough.”

Naw Kee received life-saving treatment for her blood disorder.
“Already, Naw Kee, has increased energy and she isn’t as easily fatigued as before,” shares our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP). “Her appetite is much greater and her mother thinks that she will soon show weight gain. Naw Kee’s plans for the future include a return to her studies at the bible school she was attending previously.”
“She loves singing in the choir and would like to become a Christian missionary with her life’s work,” BBP adds. “Naw Kee’s mother is very relieved that her daughter is on a path to recovery, as the continual stress and worry for her daughter had made family life very difficult. Also, now it should be possible for the family to reestablish a stable financial footing.”
Naw Kee’s mother adds, “I want to thank the donors for their generous donations, because surgery was not financially possible for us. We can go home and rebuild our lives.”
