Jemal is a two-year-old boy who lives with his mother in Ethiopia. Jemal was born with Hirschsprung’s disease which causes him great difficulty in passing stool. Although Jemal is quite young, he has already undergone surgery to have a colostomy bag implanted and he requires another operation.
Jemal’s mother is a casual day laborer and receives no support from her husband in caring for their son. Jemal’s mother is hopeful for her young son’s future, and shares, “I dream that one day my son’s problem will be over and that he will grow to a normal healthy boy. Maybe he will become a businessman and help me put food on the table!”
For $1,500, Jemal will receive a rectal pull-through. This operation will enable Jemal to pass stool normally without the need for future surgeries or colostomy bags. Together we can make Jemal’s mother’s dreams come true, and improve Jemal’s quality of life.
