Thi Ha is a good-natured six-year-old living in Burma. He loves playing games with his friends, but he’s also dealing with a very serious situation.
Thi Ha has thalassemia, a blood disorder passed down through families that causes the body to make an abnormal form of hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen). The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia and calls for frequent blood transfusions (difficult on a little guy like this).
Because thalassemia affects the body’s ability to produce red blood cells, removing the spleen greatly improves the patient’s condition because it increases hemoglobin in the body.
For $1,100, we can pay for Thi Ha to have a splenectomy. When asked about her son’s future, Thi La’s mother says she hopes her son will recover soon. She hopes he will become a monk when he grows up. Let’s help this sweet kid live the life he was meant to!

Thi Ha received surgery to treat a blood disorder.
Although he is still recovering, Thi Ha’s parents say they can already see a huge difference. He is eating and sleeping well and has much more energy. Before surgery, Thi Ha was not able to play a lot, couldn’t run with his friends, and would often just sit aside and watch. Now, his mother says she has to tell him to slow down as he tries to run but is still recovering! Before surgery, when our medical partner asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up, he simply lowered his head and didn’t answer. When they asked him again during his follow-up appointment, he said with a smile that after seeing the medical staff helping people, he now wants to be a doctor!
Thi Ha’s parents repeated again and again how thankful they were to all of the hospital staff and especially the donors who made his treatment possible. They said they would have been able to afford his treatment and don’t know what would have happened to their son had he not undergone surgery.
