Sophanna is a 36-year-old garment factory worker. She lives in Kampot province with her husband and two children. Due to a chronic medical condition, her husband has not been able to work the past couple of years. Because of this, Sophanna and her 16-year-old daughter are the breadwinners in their family. When not at work, Sophanna enjoys spending time with her kids and cooking.
Ten years ago, Sophanna had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, Sophanna experiences hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear discharge. It is difficult for her to hear at work and at home
Sophanna traveled to our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) to receive treatment. On June 27th, she will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in her right ear, where ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Her family is able to contribute $100 to the surgery, and she needs only $926 to fully fund the procedure.
Sophanna shared that she wants to stop feeling unwell and improve her hearing so that she can enjoy her time at home with her family.

Sophanna underwent an ear surgery so she can hear well again.
Sophanna traveled three hours to our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), hoping the doctors there could help her. They performed a surgery on her ear to remove infected tissue from a bone behind it. This was done to treat a worrying cyst she had.
After the surgery, she felt some pain around the area, but she’s been cleaning it regularly. She’s scheduled to return in 10 days to have her stitches removed. In the meantime, she’s been careful not to overexert herself to ensure proper healing. While it might take a few weeks for her hearing to get better, Sophanna is eager to get back to work. She wants to provide for her family and hopes that her daughter can go back to school and that her son can continue his education.
Sophanna said, “I am very happy that CSC has successfully operated on me. I trust them to treat me with care. I am afraid my children will not get a good education if they have to work to feed us, and happy to soon go back to the factory. Thank you to CSC and the donors for making this happen.”
