David is a 21-year-old man from Cambodia who works installing air conditioning units. He enjoys playing football in his free time. David traveled an hour with his sister to reach our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), after hearing about their services on the radio.
David developed an infection in both ears, or chronic otitis media, when he was 10 years old. Both of his tympanic membranes have perforated and resulted in pain, discharge, and hearing loss.
With $831, David can receive treatment for his condition. ENT surgeons will first perform a myringoplasty [closure of the ear perforation] on the left side. Then again after 6 weeks, they will perform the same surgery on the right side. The surgery will treat the infection and heal the perforated tympanic membrane, allowing his hearing to improve over time. His pain and discharge will also stop, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Let’s help make it possible!

David had his hearing restored.
Doctors performed a successful myringoplasty, which closed the perforation in David’s left ear. He returned home after the procedure, and his sutures were removed one week later.
Soon, David will return to Watsi’s medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, to undergo the same surgery on his right ear. Returning to the clinic is not easy for David, as it requires him to take the day off from work. Now that hearing has been restored to one ear, however, the second myringoplasty is less urgent than the first. The second surgery will be free whenever David returns.
“I am really happy after the surgery,” says David. “I think my ear disease will be healed and the discharge will stop. Now that I am better, I can go back to work as usual.”
David’s sister, who accompanied him to the hospital, adds, “I am very happy that my brother got the operation so that his ear discharge will stop, and he will have good hearing.”
