Mirriam is a 43-year-old hard working farmer who plants cassava in Yumbe district with her children who support her largely in subsistence farming for home consumption. Her condition started 11 years ago with swelling on her neck, and she went to the health centre or assessment.
Later she traveled to a hospital where assessment was done and was told that her condition wasn’t ready for treatment, which made her to stay for more six years. Mirriam went back after that duration for review and later advised for surgery, yet she didn’t have the finances for the operation, so she shared that she just came home despite the associated challenges of the thyroid. Luckily enough, the community leader made awareness about a new surgical program in their area, and she happened to be selected to be one of the beneficiaries.
Our medical partner, Hope Health Action, is helping Mirriam receive treatment. On September 10, she is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $603, and she and her family need help raising the funds.
She says, “I’m grateful for the support you have given and hope to be better and resume my farm work and home activities after I recover.”
