Yong is an 85-year-old woman from Kampong Thom province. She is a retired rice farmer who has three sons, three daughters, and eleven grandchildren. She lives with her husband, who is retired, and her eldest daughter, who is also a retired farmer. Her favorite hobbies are attending ceremonies and visiting the pagoda.
About one year ago, Yong developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
When Yong learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On July 6th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $263 procedure.
Yong said, “I hope that after my surgery, my vision will improve so that I can easily recognize my relatives and go out independently. I also hope I will no longer have to worry about my eyesight.”
