Phan is a 76-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He is married and has one daughter, two sons, and three grandchildren. He lives with his wife, who is also a farmer, his daughter, who is a vegetable seller, and his son, who is a farmer. Phan likes to listen to monks pray and the news on the radio. About six months ago, Phan developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Phan learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On November 3rd, doctors will perform a small-incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. He can contribute $25, but needs help raising $238 more to fund his procedure and care. Phan said, "I hope after surgery, I can see better and go back to growing rice. I would like to plant some vegetables around my house and not worry about my eye anymore."

Simeng is an eight-year-old Grade 4 student from Cambodia. She lives in Svay Rieng Province with her parents, who both work in garment factories, and a younger brother who attends kindergarten. Simeng enjoys studying Khmer, and dreams of becoming a nurse in future. In December 2025, Simeng was involved in a road traffic accident that caused a fracture on her left elbow. She underwent surgery at a hospital in Vietnam, where doctors stabilized the fracture with metal pins because her family lives near the Cambodia–Vietnam border. The fracture has healed well, and she has regained full movement and normal function of her left arm. She has returned to her daily activities, and the metal pins can now be safely removed as the final step in her treatment. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On July 13th, Simeng will undergo a surgical hardware removal procedure, which will cost $378. The surgery will remove the metal pins from her left elbow, completing her recovery and allowing her to continue using her arm comfortably for school, play, and daily activities. Simeng's father said, “I am grateful my daughter’s arm has healed. I hope removing the implants will complete her recovery, so she can continue growing up healthy and active.”

Sam On is a 65-year-old former soldier from Kampong Thom, Cambodia. He lives with his wife, a grocery seller, and their two children. His eldest child helps with household responsibilities, while his youngest child is studying in Grade 7. Since retiring from military service, he has relied on a small government pension to support his family. In his free time, he enjoys watching the news on his phone. In 1997, Sam On stepped on a landmine, resulting in a traumatic injury that required a below-knee amputation of his right leg. Following rehabilitation, he was able to use a prosthetic limb and regain mobility for many years. However, over the past several months, he developed a chronic infected wound at the amputation stump. The wound has produced persistent discharge and caused pain and discomfort, making it difficult for him to wear his prosthetic leg and move around independently. His wife has been caring for the wound at home, but despite her efforts, the infection did not improve. As the condition worsened and began interfering with his daily activities, Sam On sought medical attention and was referred to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, for specialized care. Doctors diagnosed him with an infected right below-knee amputation stump. On June 3rd, Sam On will undergo stump revision surgery, costing $478. The procedure will remove infected tissue, promote healing, relieve pain, and help him use his prosthetic leg comfortably again. Sam On said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to receive treatment. I hope my stump will heal well, the pain and discharge will stop, and I can use my prosthetic leg comfortably again.”
