Meet Jhapat, a 60-year-old man from Nepal. Jhapat was walking down a flight of stairs in his house when he tripped, fell on his back and fractured his left femur.
Since then he has been in pain, has difficulty moving around, and his leg is swollen. Before the injury, he used to work in the field and look after his cattle, but now he remains unable to get out of bed.
Jhapat lives with his wife, who now tends to the farm alone to keep the family going. They have two grown sons who are married and have settled in India.
For $579 Jhapat will receive surgery, hospital care, x-rays, and medication to repair his femur. Doctors will realign the bones in his left femur and secure them in place with pins.
After surgery, our medical partner, Possible, is confident that Jhapat will regain mobility. “I’ve been told that my surgery is difficult and critical at this age. I pray to god that all goes well,” says Jhapat.

Jhapat received a life-changing hip replacement surgery – the first ever procedure of its kind in the whole far-western region of Nepal.
Injuries such as Jhapat’s can be critical in the elderly. Such a complex surgery is uncommon in the rural area, and one would have to travel to the capitol city, Kathmandu, more than 48 hours away by bus to get the expensive but necessary treatment. Jhapat is now free of pain and no longer bed-ridden. He can walk well and sit on his hips without any difficulty, and with continued physiotherapy exercises, he will regain all of his mobility and be able to return to working with his cattle.
Jhapat is very excited after the surgery, both because he’ll be able to walk again and because of the innovative nature of the procedure. “My photo even came in a newspaper because my surgery was the first of its kind in this region. I feel very proud,” said a beaming Jhapat.
