Meet Oeun, a 68-year old grandmother from Cambodia with five sons, two daughters, and ten grandchildren. According to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she enjoys visiting the pagoda and listening to the monks pray.
“Two years ago Oeun developed a cataract in both eyes. This causes her blurred vision, tearing, irritation, and she is afraid of sunshine. She can’t see everything clearly, recognize faces easily, do work well, or go anywhere outside on her own,” explains CSC.
For $225, Oeun will undergo a cataract surgery that will remove the cloudy lenses from both of her eyes and replace them with artificial lenses. The funding also includes post-operative care, and after the surgery Oeun will be able to see clearly again.

Oeun underwent vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Oeun had one of her cataracts removed in a short procedure, during which her clouded lens was removed and replaced with a clear, synthetic implant. The surgery went very well, and already her vision is much clearer. Though she was scheduled to have both cataracts removed, she has yet to return to receive her second surgery.
For any number of reasons, it can take patients some time to return for follow-up care. Patients often live far away or have important family matters that keep them from coming back to the clinic. Whenever Oeun can return, her second surgery to remove the other cataract will be free.
