Yorn is an 80-year-old widow from Kampot province in Cambodia. She has two sons, four daughters, and fourteen grandchildren. Yorn is currently living with one of her grandsons, and she lives near all of her children and grandchildren, so she visits with her family often. Yorn’s children work as rice farmers to support her and the family. At home, Yorn likes spending time with her grandchildren and visiting the pagoda to pray with her neighbors.
About one year ago, Yorn developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her to experience itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places on her own.
When Yorn learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On June 24th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Yorn contributed a co-pay toward her care and needs assistance raising $238 to fund the remaining cost of her treatment.
Yorn said, “I hope, after surgery, I can go out on my own and recognize my grandchildren more easily.”
