Lobulu is a 17 year old teenager who lives with his uncle in Arusha, a city in northern Tanzania. He is from a big family of ten siblings and currently lives with six other family members in a busy household! Lobulu enjoys going to school and appreciates the value of a good education.
Lobulu is suffering from a condition called “Madura Foot,” a fungal disease that causes open sores on the affected area. Lobulu’s foot is bleeding and causing him a lot of pain. Because of both the pain and also feelings of embarrassment, Lobulu no longer leaves his home and cannot help his uncle to raise the cows that provide them with income. Additionally, Lobulu worries he will not be able to complete school if this problem persists.
Lobulu’s uncle is unable to pay for the surgery and skin grafting required to rid his nephew of this painful disease. Treatment, which costs $800, will allow Lobulu to have normal use of his foot, rid him of the pain he is experiencing and allow him to continue the normal, active life led by most teenagers.
