Florence is a 43-year-old woman who lives in Uganda with her husband, and six children. She works as a farmer alongside her husband, and also sells smoked fish for a living.
About 10 years ago, Florence started experiencing a swelling and discomfort on her neck. At the local health center, she was assessed and referred to a higher hospital so she could be examined by a specialist. However, due to financial difficulties, Florence did not follow along with the referral. Over time, her symptoms have gotten worse, including pain and difficulty in swallowing, which has affecting her work output.
When Florence heard about a surgical support program from a community leader, she went in for review and was diagnosed with a goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland. She needs surgery treatment for the condition.
Our medical partner, Hope Health Action, is helping Florence receive treatment. On September 9th, she is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy, where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $603, and she and her family need help raising the funds.
Florence says, “I am grateful to HHA and the donors for the support. I hope to get better after operation, so I can resume my regular duties, and my work.”
