Sokong is a 16-year-old boy from Kandal province, Cambodia. His father works as a construction worker, and his mother sells vegetables at the local market. In his free time, he enjoys sleeping and helping his parents around the house and garden. His favorite meal is lemongrass sour soup.
Six months ago, Sokong was in a motorbike accident, where his left side was crushed against a car, causing a serious arm injury. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He is unable to move or lift his left arm and has no sensation below the elbow. He has dropped out of high school and has difficulty completing everyday tasks.
Sokong traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, to receive treatment. This is the only center in the whole country where this treatment is available. On October 9th, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, the surgery will help restore movement and sensation in his arm. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $737 to fund this procedure.
Sokong’s father said: “After the surgery, I hope that my son will be able to return to school and work with me at the construction company someday.”
