Meet Emmanuel, a lively and talkative eight-year-old boy from Tanzania.
“While at home, he helps his mother fetch water, collect firewood and take care of a small garden outside their house,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF).
Emmanuel has bilateral clubfoot, a congenital deformity of the feet which severely affects his gait. This has caused both physical pain and difficulty at school with peers teasing him. Still, he enjoys going to school. “He likes to read and write,” says AMHF.
For $1,660, Emmanuel will receive a combination of casting and surgery to help him walk normally. Funding also provides for his complete stay in both the hospital and Plaster House, a rehabilitation facility that specializes in postoperative care for children.
With treatment, Emmanuel will be able to walk correctly, wear shoes, and have a lesser risk of developing osteoarthritis.
“I want to be able to walk properly and wear shoes so that no one will laugh at me when I go to school,” Emmanuel shares.

Emmanuel began treatment to help him walk normally.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, reports, “Emmanuel is on the initial treatment to correct bilateral clubfoot. The cast change is done once every two weeks and that will continue for a few more weeks before a small surgery is done. After the surgery and the wounds have healed, Emmanuel will be required to continue the treatment by wearing night casts. At the end of the treatment, Emmanuel will be able to walk on plantigrade.”
“I have seen successful treatments and so I have no worry that I too will have straight feet, and the ability to wear shoes and walk properly in the future,” shares Emmanuel. “I am very happy and thankful for all the support and ongoing treatment.”
