Elio lives with his mother in rural Guatemala. He is thirteen months old and has been diagnosed with malnutrition, which results from a diet that doesn’t contain enough nutrients and calories.
Malnutrition leads to stunted growth and an immune system that is too weak to fight off many infections. If malnutrition is not treated, it can result in an increased risk of chronic disease and lowered intelligence.
Fortunately, malnutrition is very treatable. Our medical partner will closely monitor Elio’s growth and provide him with food supplements for necessary calories and nutrients.
Elio’s mother weaves in order to provide for them, but she does not make enough money to pay for Elio’s treatment. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $437 to fund his care.

Elio received successful malnutrition treatment.
Since beginning treatment for malnutrition, Elio has been gaining weight and growing taller. Elio has more of an appetite now, and Elio’s mother has learned how best to feed her son in the nutrition classes. With continued treatment, we are confident that Elio will continue along this healthy trajectory.
Elio’s mother says, “I am grateful for the supplements my son receives since we are of scarce resources and cannot feed our son all he needs, but now with this support I can feed him better so that he can grow and be a healthy child.”
