Hoeun is a 61-year-old farmer who lives in Kampong Spue province in Cambodia. He is married, and he and his wife are rice farmers with six children. All of their children are married, except for one 26-year-old son who is also a farmer, who stays home to care for his parents. Hoeun spends most of his day outdoors, but enjoys listening to the radio in the evening.
One year ago an insect flew into Hoeun’s ear. A local clinic tried to remove it, and damaged his eardrum. After that, Hoeun developed an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the eardrum, in his left ear to perforate. For this reason, Hoeun experiences pain, chronic ear discharge, and ringing in the ear (tinnitus). He often experiences fever and headaches, and his hearing has deteriorated. When he feels unwell, he struggles to manage his rice crop effectively.
Hoeun traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On August 5th, he will undergo a myringoplasty procedure on his left ear, at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation in Hoeun’s ear. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $363 to fund this procedure, plus medications, supplies and inpatient care.
Hoeun said: “After surgery, I hope that my hearing will improve and I will no longer have trouble hearing or have ear discharge.”
