Y is a retired rice farmer and grandmother from Kandal province. She has one son, five daughters, and eight grandchildren. She and her husband live with her third youngest daughter, who supports them by working in a coffee shop. In her free time, Y likes praying at her local pagoda and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Around six months ago, Y developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, similar to looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking; therefore, she is unable to go places on her own.
When Y learned about our medical partner, the Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours to seek treatment. On June 2nd, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Y’s family can contribute $100 but needs help to raise $163 more to fund the procedure and her care.
Y said, “I hope I can see clearly so I can help more at home. I want to be able to go to the pagoda on my own and start growing more vegetables around my house.”
