Hoeun is a 70-year-old grandmother with four daughters and eight grandchildren. When her husband passed away ten years ago, Hoeun moved in with one of her daughters and her family in Kandal province. Hoeun retired from rice farming five years ago, and her daughter and son-in-law work as rice and vegetable farmers to support the family. Hoeun helps care for her grandchildren. In her free time, she likes visiting the village pagoda to pray.
Around six months ago, Hoeun developed a cataract in her right eye, causing blurry vision, itchiness, and tearing. She will have surgery on her right eye and then plans to return in a few months to have surgery on her left eye. A cataract is clouding the eye’s lens, like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places alone.
When Hoeun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On December 2nd, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Hoeun and her family can contribute $100 but need help to raise $153 more for the procedure.
Hoeun shared, “I want to be able to see well so I can recognize my family and help around the house more easily.”
