Inaugurated in 1989, St. Gaspar Referral Hospital is a nonprofit, faith-based regional referral hospital in Itigi, Singida Region, in rural central Tanzania, about three hours from Dodoma. Owned and operated by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood of the Catholic Church in Tanzania, the hospital serves a sparsely populated community whose livelihoods are primarily agriculture and livestock, as well as patients who travel from other regions.
The hospital’s mission is “to serve marginalized communities by providing superior medical care, educational services, and evidence-based research founded upon Catholic principles.” Its services include general medicine, surgery, pediatrics and child health, maternity care, orthopedics, urology, ENT, trauma care, reconstructive and plastic surgery, and critical care through its Emergency Department, ICU, and ward-based high-dependency units. Pediatrics is a flagship service.
St. Gaspar works with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and private insurers, although the vast majority of patients pay out of pocket. The hospital is committed to making essential, high-quality care accessible to the communities it serves, including patients who travel from across the region for specialized and emergency services.
