This little guy is Jairo! He is a one-year-old boy from Guatemala. His parents are subsistence farmers who don't earn much money. Putting food on the table is sometimes a struggle, and Jairo has lost a frightening amount of weight in the past two months. Our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, writes: "Jairo has slipped into the downward spiral, so common in Guatemala, of frequent intestinal infections, complicated by malnutrition, leading to anorexia and poor food intake." Jairo needs our help to fund intensive nutritional therapy and get him back on track. For $525, the treatment will help Jairo regain lost weight, increase his energy, and help him resume normal development!

Ten-week-old Careen is a fighter. Like all infants, she has been learning tons of new skills to survive in her life outside of the womb. Currently, she is unable to feed and sleep normally owing to an external protrusion of her brain through an opening of her skull which failed to close completely during her fetal development. Without surgery, Careen could experience developmental delay, vision problems, mental and growth retardation, seizures, and even premature death. Careen’s mother is a determined young woman who was abandoned by her family when she learned she was pregnant. Her love for Careen was as strong then as it is now, and she wants nothing more than to see her baby grow up healthy and strong. She needs $850 for the surgery that will save Careen’s life. Dorine is 28 and about to give birth! She lives with her husband and children in rural Kenya where they farm and run a family business selling beans, tomatoes, dried fish and other items. Like all mothers, Dorine desperately wants to give her baby the best possible start in life by continuing to visit the hospital in the lead up to the birth and afterwards. However, with so many mouths to feed, health care for her and her unborn baby is prohibitively expensive. With just $215 from Watsi supporters Lwala Community Alliance cam provide Dorine with prenatal health care; community health worker home visits for training on nutrition, pregnancy risk factors and micro-savings in preparation for the baby; delivery at Lwala Community Hospital and a postnatal check-up for Dorine and her baby.

Cynthia was born with hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid builds up in the skull and puts life-threatening pressure on the brain. When her condition became evident, Cynthia's mother Ester was confused and scared for her child’s health. She is doing her best to seek treatment and help Cynthia grow up normally. Now, at one year old, the fluid pressure is causing Cynthia’s eyes to bulge. Her doctors say that soon she won’t be able to shut them. She needs shunt placement surgery, or an endoscopy of the third ventricle in her brain, to drain the excess fluid. By funding her treatment, we can help Cynthia avoid fatal brain damage and hopefully enable her to make her developmental milestones like a normal baby.
