Meet Christopher, a one-year-old boy from Guatemala who is malnourished. “Christopher is extremely short. It seems like the major source of the problem is that Christopher’s mother is young, and this is her first baby, so food in the home hasn’t been adequately prepared. There is also food insecurity,” reports our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq. Both of Christopher’s parents are young and Christopher is the couple’s only child. “They are doing their best, but they need a lot of educational counseling. The diet that Christopher is eating is inadequate, in part because of poverty and in part because of not knowing how to take care of a baby,” continues Wuqu’ Kawoq. For $535, we can provide nutritional therapy to Christopher as well as educational training to Christopher’s parents. Wuqu’ Kawoq explains, “Christopher’s diet will improve, and his growth curve and development will start to take off. Christopher’s mother and father will learn valuable skills that will help keep Christopher growing.”

Bikram is an eight-years-old boy from Nepal. He lives in a family of six members and studies in the second grade. Bikram’s family primarily farms for their living but they cannot produce enough to fully support the family, so his father must travel to India to work as a wage laborer. Bikram loves Nepali language class and playing volleyball. “Bikram was watching older boys in his neighborhood play volleyball, when the ball rolled down the slope by the side of the court. He ran down the slope to get the ball, but fell down in the process. He developed a painful swelling in the elbow and left hand,” reports our medical partners, Possible. Bikram’s family is unable to afford treatment for his broken arm. His mother tells us, “It is very difficult for us right now. His father has just gone to India and we had already take a loan for his travel to India. Birendra is a sweet nine-year-old boy from Nepal. He fell into a pot of hot oil when he was just a year old, sustaining serious burns on his head. The burns were never properly treated. Now, the resulting scar tissue is preventing the skin on his head from fully healing, and his hair from growing. Birendra is in fourth grade and lives with his mother, grandmother, siblings, and uncle’s family. As is common in Nepal, his father works in India and sends money home. Birendra is well loved - his grandmother confided in our medical partner that he is her favorite grandson! For $1,415, we can pay for surgery that will repair the skin on Birendra's head and allow him to move past this childhood accident.

Bishwas is an eight-year-old boy living in Nepal. He lives with his parents, grandmother, uncles, and siblings. His family farms, but they only get enough yield to feed the family for three months. Bishwas enjoys sports, and he says that his favorite sport is cricket! Bishwas burned his head years ago and the skin is still so damaged that his hair is unable to grow back in. For $1,415, we can help Bishwas receive plastic surgery to repair his damaged skin, reduce the risk of future complications, and allow the hair to grow back on the injured part of his head. Moe Moe is a 15-year old girl who is deeply dedicated to her family. She has a large mass on her neck that her doctors say could become "very dangerous" if she doesn't have immediate surgery to remove it. Moe Moe left school when she was in the second grade to help support her family. Her parents work as day laborers, earning less than 3 dollars a day. While she helps her family around the house, Moe Moe is now unable to work because of concerns regarding her medical condition. Burma Border Projects is requesting $2,000 to fund an operation to remove the mass on Moe Moe's neck. With proper treatment, Moe Moe will be able to help support her family and live the healthy life every teenage girl deserves!
