“I pray for a successful treatment so that my daughter can walk like other children,” said Muokolewa’s mother. Meet Muokolewa, a three-month-old baby girl from Tanzania who was born with bilateral clubfoot. “Muokolewa will not be able to walk [normally] when she starts walking and she will also have an increased risk of developing early osteoarthritis of the small bones if not treated,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. Muokolewa is a happy, healthy baby. As the fourth born child in her family, her mother shares with us that “she is very comfortable being carried by anyone!” Muokolewa’s mother is a small scale farmer, but at the moment caring for Muokolewa is her full time job. Unable to afford treatment, she sought out African Mission Healthcare Foundation in order to help Muokolewa receive the care she needs. In order to correct Muokolewa’s gait, she will need x-rays, casts, clubfoot surgery, and recovery treatment. $1,160 will cover the cost of Muokolewa’s treatment, ensuring she will grow up strong, walking normally, and enjoying activities like all of the other children in her town!

This is Kevin, a two-month-old baby from Uganda. His parents are farmers who grow sweet potatoes, beans, and millet to support their family. Kevin has three older siblings, two of whom are in school right now. "He was born here at the hospital weighing 2.5 kilograms," our medical partner, the Kellermann Foundation (KF), tells us about Kevin. "However, when he was three weeks he started to lose weight for an unknown reason." At two months, baby Kevin is breastfeeding but remains unable to gain weight. "It could be because the mother is not producing enough milk or because there are underlying health issues that keep him from a stable weight," KF writes. Clinicians have recommended that Kevin be treated for malnutrition. Supplemental milk and breast milk will help ensure that he experiences normal physical and mental development. Kevin's parents will be able to cover a small co-pay for Kevin's care, but with $375, we can help Kevin continue to grow.

Meet Alesandro! He is a one-year-old boy living in Guatemala with his family. “Alesandro is a classic case of stunting, or chronic malnutrition," our medical partner in Guatemala shares. "If we don't intervene, this chronic lack of a high quality diet will have a permanent impact on his brain and cognitive function." “This is a tough social situation,” Alesandro's doctors write. “Alesandro’s mom is raising five young children all by herself. She's had to move back in with her own mom, and the two of them are trying to keep the family together. All that she can afford to give Alesandro to eat is a thin porridge several times a day.” They continue, “Alesandro's mom has heard great things about what we are able to do in our nutritional rehabilitation program.
