Meet Moeun, a 56-year-old man living in Cambodia. He and his wife have two daughters, two sons, and eight grandchildren. “He works as a rice and crop farmer,” shares our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). “In his free time he likes to read and watch Thai dramas on television.”
Moeun has had a cataract in each eye for ten years. A cataract is a clouding in the eye’s lens that affects vision. In Cambodia, about 80% of blindness is caused by preventable conditions like cataracts. “Moeun’s cataracts cause him blurred visions, tearing, itchiness, and he is afraid of sunshine,” says CSC. “It is hard for him to see clearly, go outside on his own, and do work.”
For $225, Moeun will undergo small incision cataract surgery on each eye. Afterward, he will receive intraocular lens implants to replace his natural lenses.
CSC expects that after the short procedure, he will have restored, clear vision.
