“Muhumuza is a teacher by profession,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “Muhumuza has been teaching in a private school for three years now.” The 29-year-old lives with his wife in Uganda.
Two years ago, Muhumuza noticed a painful swelling on his abdomen. After visiting a government hospital, he was was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia.
Due to this condition, Muhumuza's intestine protrudes through the abdominal muscles at the belly button. In addition to affecting everyday comfort, the hernia also puts Muhumuza at risk of intestinal obstruction.
When initially diagnosed, Muhumuza was informed that surgery was necessary to treat his condition. However, his income was simply not enough to afford the operation. Without treatment, the swelling continued.
For $220, Muhumuza will receive a hernia repair. During this procedure, the hernia will be surgically moved back into its correct position within the abdomen.
With treatment, "Muhumuza will have improved quality of life. He will be able to work fully and support his family," AMHF shares. "After surgery, Muhumuza hopes to recover fully and find means of supplementing his income and also to develop his piece of land.”
