Three-year-old Neymarah lives in Haiti with her mother, who works as a tailor, and her grandmother. She likes to help her mother prepare the fabric for the school uniforms that she makes. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance (HCA), tells us, “Neymarah was born with a condition called complete atrioventricular canal defect, in which blood mixes between all four chambers of the heart without fully obtaining oxygen. This leaves her weak and out of breath and would eventually be fatal.” Neymarah needs surgery to create two functioning valves between the upper and lower chambers on both sides of the heart and to place patches over the existing defects (holes). “Following surgery,” says HCA, “Neymarah should have normal circulation restored to her heart. She should not need further surgery in the future.” For $1500, HCA will provide the overseas preparation and transportation required for Neymarah’s surgery. MECENAT is donating $5000 to cover the remaining treatment costs. Neymarah is excited to start preschool after surgery. Her mother shares, "I want Neymarah to be able to walk to and from school like the other children."

Meet Tha Khue, a three-month old boy from Burma. Tha Khue means “happy," according to our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP). His parents are subsistence farmers and occasional day laborers. Tha Khue has bilary atresia, a rare, life-threatening condition that causes a build of bile that seriously damages the liver. Tha Khue's symptoms include jaundice, a swollen abdomen, and frequent vomiting. $1,500 will fund a Kasai procedure for Tha Khue -- a surgical bypass to prevent liver damage. "Once Tha Khue has received treatment for his biliary atresia, his abdomen will become less extended, he will no longer suffer from jaundice or yellow urine, he will stop vomiting frequently, and cry less," BBP shares. “I am very worried for my son, I hope that he will be able to get treatment for his condition," Tha Khue's father shares. "In the future, I dream that he will grow up to be healthy and maybe even to become a doctor."

Say hello to Vathana, an 11-year-old girl from Cambodia. Vathana has a brother and is in the third grade at school. She loves it when other children come over to her house to play, and she is very creative at making up games to play with the other kids," our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us. Vathana has a large bulge on her face caused by brain tissue pushing through a hole in her skull. This causes her to be shy and ashamed of the way she looks. CSC explains, “She is also at higher risk to develop other health issues due to the defect in her skull that lets brain tissue seep out.” For $390, we can fund surgery to remove Vantha's growth and put a bone graft over the resulting hole in her skull. Meet Ma Khin, a 59-year-old mother of 11 from Thailand. Ma Khin currently lives with her youngest daughter, who helps support her by working in a garment factory. Ma Khin has a uterine fibroid, a noncancerous tumor that developed in the womb, which has caused her lots of physical pain. Her upcoming treatment, which costs $1,500, will remove the tumor and alleviate her debilitating back pain. “When she is better she would like to go back to work and look after her daughter in whichever way she can,” our medical partner, Burma Border Projects, tells us. “She looks forward to her daughter having a child of her own.” Together, we can give Ma Khin access to the medical care she needs!

“Hugo is a highly motivated man who dreams of getting back to his old life, being able to work, hang out with his friends and family without stigma or shame, and being able to be independent,” our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, shares. Hugo, a 45-year-old man from Guatemala, has a bilateral arm amputation. In January, he lost both arms in a severe electrocution accident, which has made him unable to continue working and unable to care for himself. For $1255, Hugo can receive two prosthetic arms so he can regain his independence. He tells us, “this injury was the worst thing that has ever happened to me, but I’m happy to be alive, and I’m excited to have prosthetic arms and get back to work.” Let’s help him out!

Sikalioti is a 65-year-old man from Malawi. Sikalioti lives with his wife, who he has been married to longer than he can remember, and together they have five children and 12 grandchildren. The family makes a living by farming and selling mandasi, traditional donuts in their village. Unfortunately Sikalioti has an enlarged prostate, which causes him considerable discomfort and difficulty performing normal activities. "He cannot urinate normally, putting him at risk of irreversible kidney failure,” our partners at World Altering Medicine tell us. “A catheter had to be placed through his abdomen to remove urine from his bladder due to his prostate enlargement. He is relied upon as the elder of the house, and his illness is affecting the whole family, as they rely on him for food security through his farming." Treatment of his condition costs $745, which is expected to relieve him of further pain related to his condition and will help him bounce back so he can return to work and caring for his family. His family says, “we can't wait for him to get better, so we can lead a normal life again!"

Nab is a 23-year-old from Cambodia. He works as a furniture maker to support his family. In his free time he likes to play football and listen to pop music. In 2012, Nab injured his wrist in an accident while working with a wood saw. Due to his injury Nab cannot extend the fingers in his right hand or use it properly. Because he couldn't afford the cost of treatment, Nab had to stop working and could not support his family anymore. Nab says he is sad that he cannot do carpentry anymore and mostly stays at home now. We can help Nab get back to his normal life! For $300, Nab will receive surgery that will release and lengthen the affected tendon in his wrist to restore its normal function. Let's help Nab get back to work and support his family!
