Joseph is a 79-year-old man living in Kenya with his wife. For work, Joseph tends to his neighbor’s sheep and his wife sells groceries at the local market. Their only son lives a few towns away with his family, working as a motorbike-taxi operator. Joseph has a cataract in his right eye that keeps him from seeing clearly. Cataracts are characterized by clouding of the lens and are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Joseph came to African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) in hopes of receiving cataract surgery to restore his vision. Joseph’s doctors at AMHF tell us, “if the surgery is not done, Joseph will never be able to see using his right eye.” “My son has his own family to take care of and I do not want to be a burden for him,” Joseph explains. It will cost $230 to pay for Joseph’s surgery. With treatment, Joseph’s doctors are confident that they will be able to improve his eyesight and prevent further blindness.
