Mong is a baker from Cambodia. She has two daughters. She likes to read the news and watch Indian dramas on TV. Four years ago, Mong developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision, itchiness, tearing, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Mong learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On November 1, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope my eye surgery is successful so I can recognize the faces of my loved ones again."

This cute little boy is Brillian, a newborn baby from Kenya. Brillian has no shortage of love in his life with his mother and grandmother looking after him. Brillian’s mother is still in primary school and is taking her 8th grade exams, so Brillian’s grandmother has stepped in as the primary caregiver for Brillian as his mother recovers from her caesarian section and finishes school. Brillian was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder that is relatively common, but can cause long-term physical and mental defects in patients. Children with spina bifida like Brillian are born with an exposed mass on the lower part of their back. The mass reduces blood supply to their spinal nerves, and causes damage to their spinal cord. If it continues to grow patients may develop a curved spine (scoliosis) and incontinence. Patients are also at increased risk of infection because of the exposed mass. Brillian is in need of surgery to close the mass in his back, though his grandmother says, "I am the sole breadwinner for my family. I cannot raise the money that my grandson need for the surgery." For $980 Brillian will undergo spina bifida closure, allowing him to live a healthy life without the long-term side effects of spina bifida he faces. Maria is a lovely 3-year-old girl who has never spoken and cannot hear. Doctors at Wuku’ Kawoq have diagnosed her with sensorineural hearing loss, likely from an infection during pregnancy. Fortunately, Maria’s condition is totally treatable. With hearing aids, Maria will be able to begin learning to talk and communicate with her family. Speech therapy will also help to kick start this process and maximize her potential. Maria’s parents are attentive to her needs but work in subsistence farming and cannot afford the treatment that her condition requires.
