Samrith is a 27-year-old delivery man from Cambodia. He is the eldest ins his family and has two brothers and one sister, all of whom are students. Samrith's mother works as a clothing seller and his father is a taxi driver. In his free time, he enjoys listening to music, playing on his phone, and meeting up with friends in the evening. On September 23rd, Samrith was in a motor vehicle accident that caused a fracture and paralysis of his right arm. His family took him to a private clinic to treat the fracture, which has now healed. However, the nerve damage remains. Samrith has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his right side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He has no sensation or mobility in his right arm, which prevents him from working. Samrith traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On November 12th, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he will regain full range of motion of his arm. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $696 to fund this procedure. Samrith shared, "I hope after my surgery I am able to use my right arm again and return to working without pain."

Pyay Ti is a three-year-old boy from Burma. He likes to play with his sisters and follow them to school. Pyay Ti was diagnosed with a corneal scar in his right eye after a sliver of bamboo went into his eye accidentally. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to fund lens replacement surgery for Pyay Ti. On March 27, doctors will perform a lens replacement, during which they will remove Pyay Ti's natural lenses and replace them with an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $1,500 procedure. Pyay Ti said, “I want to see clearly, and I want to go to school when I grow up.”

Saw Shine is a 23-year-old student from Burma. He lives with his parents in Htee Thae Lay Village, Hpa-pun Township, Karen State. His parents work as farmers, planting beans, tobacco and vegetables on their small farm. In his free time, he loves to play football or help his parents on the farm. On April 27, 2018, a branch fell on Saw Shine’s right leg and broke it. At present, Saw Shine cannot walk without crutches. He feels a lot of pain when he tries to walk. With the help of our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, Saw Shine will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bones and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for February 20 and will cost $1,500. He will be able to walk properly and also able to study again. Saw Shine says, “I want to serve my community. I am especially interested in management of education systems.”

Winda is a student from Haiti. She lives on an island off the west coast of Haiti with her parents and three siblings. Her father is a fisherman. She is in seventh grade and hopes to attend university one day. Winda has a cardiac condition called rheumatic mitral and aortic regurgitation. Two of the four valves in her heart were severely damaged due to an infection earlier in childhood. As a result, her heart cannot adequately pump blood through her body. Winda will fly to India to receive treatment. On February 25, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will either repair the damaged valves in her heart, or replace them with artificial implants. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is contributing $5,000 to pay for surgery. Winda's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Winda's family overseas. She says, "I am very excited to be able to get my heart fixed so I can start feeling better!"
