“I hope I will not become a complete burden to my wife and children by failing to walk,” says Hassan.
Meet Hassan, a 74-year-old man from Tanzania. Hassan has been having trouble walking because of severe pain in his right knee caused by osteoarthritis.
“If not treated," Hassan's doctors write, "his mobility will continue to deteriorate and further affect his ability to perform a few things which he is still able to do."
“Hassan has been a farmer throughout his life; farming is what he knows how to do the best,” AMHF, the Watsi medical partner treating him, tells us. “It is through farming that he and his wife were able to raise five children who are now married and have their own families.” But due to the osteoarthritis in his right knee, Hassan is unable to farm because the pain is just too great. Without the ability to farm, Hassan has had to rely on his children to look after him and his wife; he often feels like a burden.
Hassan needs a total knee replacement surgery to relieve the pain in his knee. Once he recovers from the surgery, he will be able to support himself and his wife and will even be able to afford to get some presents for his grandchildren.
For $960, we can fund this life altering surgery, bringing joy back to the eyes of this loving grandfather.
