James is an 18-year-old who never had surgical correction of a knee problem caused by cerebral palsy. This correction is normally done to improve mobility at a young age, but James had never been operated on. James' providers at CURE International were curious why this surgery had never happened, and they discovered that James is an orphan. He needs assistance with the financial side of the surgery, as he does not have family support. James' surgery will cost $1000, and will allow him to walk more easily. Lytha is an adorable three-year-old girl from Cambodia. When Lytha was just an infant, she started to develop a cyst in her eyelid. Now at three years old, her family has become increasingly concerned and made the two and a half hour trip to Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) to seek treatment, as the cyst is getting bigger. If left untreated, Lytha is at risk of having vision problems or suffering infection. Lytha's father recently passed away from a stomach illness and her mother is a stay at home mom; therefore financial constraints have left them with few options. Surgeons have recommended a cyst drain and removal in the affected eye. CSC is seeking $250 for treatment and procedural costs which will dramatically improve young Lytha’s eyesight, affording her the chance to live a happy, full, and productive life!

Nirajan is a bright, active boy. He does well in school and loves playing cricket with his friends. His favorite subject is math, and his mother wants him to become a doctor. Nirajan's promising future is threatened by a serious heart condition. Three months ago, he was diagnosed with pericardial effusion, abnormal accumulation of fluid around the heart that can be fatal if left untreated. Nirajan is already experiencing chest pain, fever, shortness of breath, and weight loss. He needs surgery to remove the fluid and save his life. We hope to raise $1,025 to pay for Nirajan's treatment in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital. Both his father and mother work in house construction to support him, but in a community where the average person lives on less than $1 a day, this surgery is not within their reach. Six year old Choolwe comes from a loving family. His parents' lives are on hold at the moment, however, because Choolwe has hydrocephalus, a disorder that causes increased cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Choolwe's head has grown to such a large size due to the fluid buildup that he cannot function normally. Recently, he lost the ability to speak. If left untreated, hydrocephalus can be fatal. We are raising $1750 for Choolwe to have "shunt" surgery to drain the fluid from his brain. Choolwe's father is staying with him in the children's ward - trusting that he can take his son home soon with his mobility, speech and hearing returned.

Eliazar is an optimistic and motivated young man from Guatemala. Five years ago, his right arm had to be amputated after gang members threw a fragmentation grenade into his home. Despite being badly injured in the explosion, Eliazar has gone on to study law. He hopes to have a career in criminal justice. The only thing holding him back is the daily challenge of being an amputee. For $650, Eliazar can be fitted with a prosthetic device that will enable him to do the daily tasks that have become nearly impossible since his injury. He says he is, "especially looking forward to being able to use the prosthetic device to write again."

Shwe Shwe lives with her grandparents in Burma. Her mother works as a day labourer at a construction site in Thailand, sending about $118 back to the family every four months. Shwe Shwe speaks with her mother on the phone, but has not seen her for three to four years. Because of her family's financial situation, Shwe Shwe's eye growth has gone untreated for nearly her entire life. The growth is benign, but it causes Shwe Shwe pain and impedes her vision. A few years ago, she was forced to drop out of school because of it. If left untreated, it will continue to increase in size and Shwe Shwe will be unable to open her eyelid. Burma Children Medical Fund submitted Shwe Shwe to Watsi for help funding the $1500 surgery to remove the growth and restore functionality to Shwe Shwe's eye. After receiving treatment, Shwe Shwe says she wants to join her mother in Thailand.
