Seh is a 75-year-old woman who lives in Cambodia with her husband. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us Seh has four sons, seven daughters, and 20 grandchildren. She spends her time playing with her many grandchildren and doing work around the house. “Four years ago, Seh developed a cataract in each eye,” CSC says. Cataracts occur when a filmy layer develops over the eye lens. CSC explains, “This causes blurred vision, tearing, and cloudy lenses. Seh cannot work very well, see clearly, travel outside alone, or recognize people’s faces.” Accounting for 75% of all eye impairment cases across the country, cataracts are the most common cause of partial blindness in Cambodia. To access medical support, Seh and her daughter traveled four hours to reach CSC’s clinic. For $225, Seh will receive cataract surgery in both of her eyes. During this 30-minute operation, the cloudy lens in each eye will be removed and replaced with a sheer implant. Shortly afterwards, Seh will be able to see clearly again--allowing her to return to a healthy, active lifestyle. The grandmother of twenty shares, “I hope my eyes can see everything clearer now. I want to help my family do housework, take care of my grandchildren, and easily go walking outside by myself.”
