“Nov enjoys listening to the Khmer news radio station,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us. The 57-year old father of three and grandfather of three from Cambodia works as a construction worker. Over time, Nov has become increasingly unable to work and support his family due to a radial head dislocation—a dislocation of the elbow caused by an injury sustained many years ago. A radial dislocation occurs when the elbow bones become displaced from their original position, causing discomfort and a restricted range of motion. This injury can affect the surrounding bones, ligaments, and nerves. CSC shares, “Nov was doing manual construction in 1989 when he began having forearm pain. Now he has a very old fracture and radial head dislocation.” At this point, Nov can no longer carry things—and thus cannot work. With $405, Nov will receive an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery. This procedure will rebind the fractured bones in his elbow using steel plates and rods. To help ensure a safe operation, Nov will undergo all of the necessary examinations and x-rays over a two-week hospital stay. He will also work with a physiotherapist to support his recovery. CSC states that following surgery and recovery, “Nov will have full use of his arm and hand.” Regaining use of his arm will greatly impact Nov’s life. CSC shares, “Nov is very eager to get his surgery and physiotherapy done so he can go back to working and supporting his family.”
