Meet Hidaya, an 18-year-old young woman who lives in Tanzania with her mother. As the result of a serious burn, "Hidaya cannot straighten her fingers and that limits her ability to perform various activities efficiently," our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) shares. Hidaya's burn happened five years ago, while helping her mother fry dough. AMHF explains, "A neighbor friend walked into the kitchen and it’s not clear how the neighbor lost her balance and fell. As she was falling she accidentally pushed Hidaya who tried to maintain her balance but her left hand landed straight into the hot oil. Hidaya was rushed to the hospital. She was treated for a long time and the wound healed well but Hidaya cannot straighten her four fingers." "Out of three children, she is the last born and the lucky one to go to school," AMHF explains. "Hidaya enjoys reading short story books. Her father died when they were still young, leaving their mother to raise them alone. Hidaya’s mother is a small businesswoman. She owns a kiosk and sells some farm produce as well as refreshments. The little that she earns is not enough to cover the cost of treatment which Hidaya needs." $870 in funding will provide Hidaya with a contracture release surgery and skin graft. This funding will cover the expenses for the consultation, surgery, medication, and labs required. AMHF expects after surgery "Hidaya will be able to straighten her fingers allowing her to better perform various activities." Hidaya shares, "I dream of becoming a teacher and being successful in life."
