Leshan is a handsome six-year-old boy from Kenya. In April this year, Leshan began suffering persistent headaches. A visit to a local hospital had him diagnosed with malaria and pneumonia. Leshan received treatment for two months, but his condition worsened. Leshan, who was always the best in his class, could not keep up, and his performance drastically dropped. Eventually, his vision became blurred and his lower limbs weak. These symptoms forced Leshan to quit school early July 2016. His parents took him to a different hospital where a scan revealed that Leshan has excess fluid on his head and a tumor known as medulloblastoma. Urgent specialized treatment would be required, and Leshan was referred to Bethany Kids Hospital, a Watsi partner. Leshan's parents cannot afford the treatment he needs to remove the tumor. Leshan's father is a pastoralist while his mother is is a stay at home mom. The family lives in a traditional house in Rift Valley Kenya. Leshan is the twenty-second born in a family of twenty-seven children and the last born to his mother who has nine children. If not treated, Leshan faces the risk of increased intracranial pressure, which is likely to cause brain damage or even death. "Leshan is such a bright boy and we would like to see him back to school," his father shared. "He has a bright future ahead of him and that is what we wish for him."

37-year-old Sarun lives in Cambodia with his wife and their three daughters and one son. He is a farmer and enjoys watching TV and listening to the radio in his spare time. One year ago, Sarun developed a chronic open wound on his right shin from an accident. It became difficult for him to walk and he is currently in pain. Sarun and his wife traveled for three hours to reach Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), Watsi's medical partner, where they were informed that surgery is required to treat the wound. Surgeons at CSC will perform an excision of granulation and skin around the wound followed by a flap surgery. Flap surgery is a technique in plastic and reconstructive surgery where tissue is lifted from a donor site and moved to a recipient site with an intact blood supply. The excision and flap surgery cost $392 and will allow the wound to heal so Sarun can walk easily again.

This is Tong, a 68-year-old Cambodian farmer with three sons, three daughters, and four grandchildren. Like many others his age, Tong enjoys talking and drinking tea with his neighbors and listening to the monks pray. However, two years ago, Tong began to notice a loss of vision in both of his eyes. He had developed a cataract in each, leading to increasingly blurred vision and constant burning. He cannot do his work well or go outside easily either. So, Tong traveled three hours with his son to reach Watsi's medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, hoping for treatment. After a phaco procedure and IOL implant in each eye, Tong will be able to see clearly again. This surgical intervention will replace his cloudy lens with a crystalline intraocular implant. $225 in funding will cover surgical costs as well as necessary medications and respite care. Tong shares, "I hope I can see clearly again so I can easily do work on the farm and go anywhere outside on my own." With our support, Tong will be able to enjoy his independence again with clear, improved vision.

Seraphin is a 36-year-old woman from Kenya who has two children—one in nursery school and the other in high school. In July 2015, Seraphin started complaining of diminishing eyesight in both eyes. She sought medical care that month, and doctors recommended a CT scan. Because she was not able to raise the amount of money needed for the scan, she did not obtain the scan until May 2016, when her nephew took her to the hospital. After the CT scan, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. As a result of the tumor, Seraphin has lost completely lost her vision in one eye and has partial vision in the other. She complains of migraines and loss of balance. A former domestic worker, Seraphin has been unable to work to provide for her children. Since January 2016, she and her children have lived with her parents. To remove the tumor from Seraphin's brain, doctors plan to perform a craniotomy to remove a portion of her skull to access the tumor. Seraphin cannot afford to pay for the surgery, but if not treated, she may become completely blind and unable to take care of her children. $1,205 pays for surgery for Seraphin as well as six days of hospital care—two days in intensive care and four days in the general ward—after surgery. Funding also covers the costs of medicine, blood work, and pathology. Seraphin's family and friends are contributing $313 to pay for additional costs associated with her care. “My hope is to have my eyesight restored to be able to provide for my children," shares Seraphin. "I want the best for them."
