“We cannot go to the major towns or to India to get treatment. I wish I could move my hand like I could before,” says Jamuna. Meet Jamuna, a 70-year-old mother from Nepal who fractured her radius and ulna bones in her left forearm. “Jamuna was trying to come down the stairs when she slipped and injured her left forearm,” says our medical partner, Possible. “She developed a painful swelling in her arm after the incident. Jamuna is not able to move her hand. She cannot do the regular work she used to do.” Jamuna is part of a family of six. “The family is primarily involved in agriculture and also relies on savings from working in Indian towns as the main source of income. Jamuna is more confined to household work now that she has aged and helps her daughter-in-law with domestic chores,” continues Possible. For $205, we can fund treatment to heal the fractured bones in Jamuna’s left forearm. “Jamuna will be able to move her arm with ease,” Possible explains. “She will be able to do her regular work and help her family. Jamuna will be able to lead a normal life like before the incident.”

Say hello to Shailande, a 20-day-old baby from Haiti who was born with a condition called an omphalocele, a birth defect in which the infant's intestine or other abdominal organs stick out of the belly button. “There is no skin covering part of her abdomen, which needs to be closed by surgery. Her intestine remains outside of her abdomen and her navel has become infected, causing her to experience abdominal pains,” explains our medical partner, Project Medishare. Shailande is the youngest of four children. Her mother sells food, and her father is only able to do random jobs in their zone of Cite Soleil, one of the poorest and most dangerous areas in Haiti. With their combined income, affording medical treatment is not possible. For $1,500, Shailande can finally have the surgery necessary to close her abdomen in addition to the antibiotics that can heal her infection. “I am excited to see the deformation gone and see my baby’s belly healed,” says Shailande’s mother.
