Nai is a 30-year-old woman from Burma who lives with her husband, daughter, parents, sister, and her sister's four children in a refugee camp in Thailand. In 2006, Nai and her parents traveled to the refugee camp to visit relatives but were unable to return home due to armed conflict. They have remained in the camp ever since. Nai's family receives some monthly income from an organization that helps support refugees, and her husband occasionally works as a day laborer outside the camp. However, their combined income is not enough to cover daily expenses, and they sometimes have to take on debt at the grocery shop, repaying when they can. Nai stays home to care for her daughter and makes traditional dresses when she has free time to earn extra income. The family receives free basic healthcare at the camp. Nai is currently expecting her second child. Her doctors recommended that she deliver via a cesarean section due to her previous birthing history; this way, doctors can ensure the safety of both mother and child. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is helping Nai undergo a C-section on April 29th. This procedure will cost $1,500, and Nai needs your support. Nai said: "I love teaching. Phearum is a four-year-old boy and the middle child of three siblings. Phearum's parents are grocery sellers. He has not started school yet and enjoys playing with toy cars with his friends at home. Since one year ago, Phearum has been experiencing a sore throat, snoring at night, and difficulty swallowing. Frequent illness causes him to sleep poorly and lose weight. Phearum was recently diagnosed with enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which, if not treated, will cause his symptoms to persist and possibly intensify over time. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $241 to fund a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for Phearum, which is scheduled to take place on October 27th. Surgeons will remove his tonsils and adenoids, hopefully relieving Phearum of his symptoms and helping him live much more comfortably. Phearum's father said, "We have spent a lot of time and money at pharmacies and clinics but his problems have not improved. I hope after surgery Phearum can feel better, sleep well, and gain weight."

Karuma is a strong-willed 41-year-old married man living in Kenya with his three beautiful children. Karuma's wife takes care of the kids, who are all school-aged. Karuma was a cashier at a hotel, but he had to stop working after he started experiencing severe pain in his left leg. Karuma went to the hospital and was diagnosed with septic arthritis. Doctors now advise him to have knee fusion surgery to relieve his pain and help him return to work. Karuma has been relying on his relatives and well-wishers to help support his family while he is unable to work. He says, "I just want to be able to work again so that I can support myself and my family instead of depending on others." Belaynesh is a quiet 15-year-old girl living in Ethiopia. She is currently in grade eight and enjoys reading and helping around the house. Her parents are both farmers. She has three sisters and two brothers, all of whom she gets along with well. Belaynesh also likes to play with her friends in her village. Belaynesh was born with a club foot, which prevents her from walking normally. Instead, she walks on the sides of her feet. The condition causes her pain and self-esteem problems. Belaynesh says, “I always feel inferior as a person when I compare myself with my friends and it always worries me. I am so glad and thankful that I have a chance to be healed.” For $1,000, Belaynesh will undergo a left foot triple arthrodesis surgery. She will be able to live life pain-free and without the stigma that this condition can cause. Belaynesh wants to be a doctor when she grows up so she can help kids like herself.
