Kay is a 63-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has six daughters, four grandchildren, and enjoys watching Khmer dramas on television. Five years ago, Kay developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, tearing, and irritation. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Kay learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On October 10, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. Kay said, "I hope that I will be able to see clearly so I can go outside on my own and visit the pagoda."

Srey Cheab is a 37-year-old seafood seller from Cambodia. She has two sons and one daughter, and enjoys watching Khmer dramas on television in her free time. Ten years ago, Srey Cheab developed a pterygium in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and irritation. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sun damage and the cells grow abnormally over the pupil. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, working, and going anywhere outside. When Srey Cheab learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for one and a half hours seeking treatment. Srey Cheab needs a surgical procedure to remove the abnormal conjunctiva from the cornea surface and replace it with a conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence. The total cost of her procedure is $201. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care for two days. The procedure is scheduled for July 10. She says, "I hope that I will be able to see clearly again and can return to my work."

Marthe is a student from Haiti. She lives with her parents and three siblings in a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. She is in seventh grade and is an excellent student. Marthe has a cardiac condition called atrial septal defect. A hole exists between the two upper chambers of her heart. Blood leaks through this hole, leaving her sick and short of breath. Marthe will fly to the United States to receive treatment. On September 9, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will sew a patch over the hole so that blood can no longer leak through it. Another organization, HeartGift Foundation, is contributing $17,000 to pay for surgery. Marthe's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Marthe's family overseas. She says, "I am looking forward to my surgery so that I can stop worrying about my heart!"

Srey Nuon is a teenager from Cambodia. Her favorite subjects to study in school are chemistry and math, and one day she hopes to become a chemistry teacher. Srey Nuon was born with scoliosis, which is progressing with age, making it difficult to sit in school for long periods, and causing a lot of discomfort. Surgery can help correct the position of her spine, and prevent further worsening of the condition. Fortunately, spinal surgery has been scheduled for March 11. Our medical partner needs help raising $1,500 to fund this procedure. Srey Nuon says, "I hope that after my surgery I will no longer have any pain and I will be able to take care of myself and sleep better."

Lim is a rice farmer with ten grandchildren from Cambodia. She has five children and enjoys listening to the monks pray. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Lim learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On January 22, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. "I hope my mother-in-law's surgery is successful so she can see everything clearly and so she can easily work and walk outside. I hope to not worry about her vision loss anymore," says Lim's son-in-law.

Vanny is a fruit farmer from Cambodia. She has three sons, two daughters, and three grandchildren. She likes to watch Thai dramas on TV and spend time with her family. Four months ago, Vanny developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision, burning, and clouded lenses. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Vanny learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On January 9, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope my vision improves so I can return to work on the farm soon."

Seng is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She is married. She has two brothers and two sisters. She likes to listen to monks pray on the radio. A year ago, Seng developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Seng learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On January 7, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I want to go the local pagoda and lead an independent life."

Godfrey is Godfrey is a father to six and grandfather to 11. from Malawi. He is a retired medical assistant who spends his free time volunteering at a local clinic near his hometown, as well as hanging out with his family and grandchildren. Since October 2016, Godfrey has been experiencing frequent urination and pain. These symptoms are caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. He needs to undergo a prostate resection surgery, a procedure in which surgeons will remove part of the enlarged gland. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $733 to fund Godfrey's surgery. On October 18, he will undergo prostate surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner's care center. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and two weeks of hospital stay. He says, "It is an economic relief to receive this surgery. Having to pay for transport to the hospital is a burden itself so I am happy to not have to worry about the medical bills also. Please continue this service and helping others."

Faima is a baby from Kenya. Faima’s mother is a stay-at-home mom. Faima has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of her condition, Faima has been experiencing an increasing head circumference. Without treatment, Faima will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $685 to cover the cost of surgery for Faima that will treat her hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on October 4 and will drain the excess fluid from Faima's brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve her quality of life. With proper treatment, Faima will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young girl. “I am praying and hoping Faima will get treated and thrive,” shares Faima’s mother.

Kibet is a baby from Kenya. His parents are farmers, relying on seasonal rains for their maize plantation. Kibet has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of his condition, Kibet has been experiencing a rapid increase in head circumference. Without treatment, Kibet will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $685 to cover the cost of surgery for Kibet that will treat his hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on August 9 and will drain the excess fluid from Kibet's brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve his quality of life. With proper treatment, Kibet will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young boy. Kibet’s mother says, “My hope is to have my son treated. He is my only child and would wish to see him lead a normal life."

Bryan is a young student from Tanzania. He is the youngest in a family of three children. Bryan's father depends on odd jobs as a constructor, while his mother is a stay-at-home mother. Bryan was diagnosed with bilateral genu varus. His legs bow outward at the knees. This condition is typically caused by an excessive accumulation of fluoride in the bones, which often stems from contaminated drinking water. As a result, he complains of pain especially after walking for a long distance or after playing with his friends. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $940 to fund corrective surgery for Bryan. The procedure is scheduled to take place on July 6. Treatment will hopefully restore Bryan's mobility, allow him to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease his risk of future complications. Bryan’s father says, “We really want to help our son have his legs straight but our efforts haven’t helped much, we don’t know what to do next. Please help us."

Navy is a factory worker from Cambodia. She has a daughter and a son. She likes to spend time with her family at home. When she was seven years old, Navy had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her left ear to perforate. For this reason, Navy experiences recurrent infection, bad hearing, and tinnitus. She cannot communicate easily with others because she can't hear out of her left ear. Navy traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On May 2, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $423 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. She says, "I hope the infection goes away and I can hear out of my left ear again."
