Dany is six months old, and he is underweight and small for his age. He has been diagnosed with acute malnutrition. This means he has little energy to grow, and his immune system is weak and vulnerable to illness. He is also at risk of chronic disease and delayed development. Fortunately, Dany will begin malnutrition treatment on June 8, 2016. Dany lives with his family in Guatemala’s rural highlands. He loves playing with his toy plastic horse and eating his favorite foods, which are rice and soup. He is a friendly, happy baby, and he makes everyone around him smile. Dany’s father works every day in the local countryside, cultivating blackberries and corn, which he later sells in the local market. Dany’s mother stays at home and takes care of the family and their household needs. Dany’s parents worry about their son’s growth, but they do not have the resources to pay for Dany’s $492 malnutrition treatment. While malnutrition can have devastating effects, it is also very treatable. Growth monitoring, micronutrients, and food supplementation will help Dany recover. He will gain weight and grow taller to catch up with other children his age, and his immune system will grow stronger. Community health workers will teach his mother about creating a nutrient-rich diet from limited resources. Treatment will give Dany a chance to grow healthy and strong.
