Turyakira is a 27-year-old nursing student and the youngest in a family of 11 children. Her mother is a small scale farmer, and sadly, her father died of prostate cancer in 2012. Her mother was later able to construct a four-room semi-permanent house for her family. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends and reading books. Ten years ago, Turyakira began to experience troubling symptoms, including swelling in her neck that worsened over time. When she sleeps, she loses her voice and her breathing rate increases. She was diagnosed with a multinodular goiter and needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping Turyakira receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on June 4th at AMH's care center, where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. Now, Turyakira needs $293 to fund her procedure. Turyakira shared, “I pray for a successful surgery. I will proceed with my nursing course comfortably and probably with better grades after receiving treatment.”

Duy is a 65-year-old vegetable farmer from Cambodia. He is married and has two sons, two daughters, and eight grandchildren. Duy likes to watch the news and Khmer boxing on TV. One year ago, Duy developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him photophobia, tearing, blurry vision, and itchiness. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Duy learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and half hours by taxi with his wife seeking treatment. On November 11th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Duy shared, "I hope I can see my children have happiness, because that is my happiness. Thank you for your support."

Seng Vorn is a 50-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has two sons, two daughters, and she enjoys listening to the radio in her free time. Three years ago, Seng Vorn developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, tearing, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Seng Vorn learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for five hours seeking treatment. On December 9th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. "I hope that I will be able to look after my family and can help around the house with the cooking again," she shared.

Peter is a man from Malawi. He lives with his wife, and together they have one child. Since October of last year, Peter has had a right inguinal hernia. He has experienced swelling on the right side of his body, together with an increase in pain that prevents him from being able to work. Fortunately, on May 28, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $334 to fund Peter's surgery. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and six nights of hospital stay. He is optimistic about the surgery and looks forward to working normally as before. He says, "Thank you to this project for the assistance, and let it continue to assist others too!"

Victor is a 36-year-old man from Kenya who used to work as a fruit trader. Victor lives with his wife in a settlement in Nairobi, and together they have four children who, with the help of their grandparents, are all enrolled in school. Several years ago, Victor suffered a severe road accident. He was admitted to the hospital for three months and underwent two surgeries. Victor was left in crutches, unable to work. Last year, Victor underwent a first stage bone transport, a technique that allows for the regeneration of bony tissue. Surgeons have now recommended that Victor undergo a second stage bone transport in order to enhance his future mobility and prevent further infection. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,500 to cover the cost of Victor's operation. The procedure is scheduled to take place on June 29 and, once completed, should allow Victor to walk with ease and live comfortably with his family again. “I would like to get well to continue providing for my family and educate my children," says Victor.

Maria, a 40-year-old woman from Bolivia, is a dedicated mother of several young children. She works very hard to take care of her family, but because of a recent health condition, this has become more difficult. Maria's doctor at Watsi's medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, tells us, "Maria has a large growth on her upper arm that is extremely painful and growing rapidly. Because of how rapid it was growing, and because it felt very firm, we were actually initially concerned that it was a cancer and we did a biopsy which fortunately was positive only for lipoma, a benign condition. However, she is still having tons of pain and she needs a procedure to remove the growth." Maria is looking forward to having this surgery and returning back to her family pain-free, and for $220 we can make this a reality! Let's help her get the care she deserves.
