Sina is a 22-year-old woman from Cambodia with chronic otitis media, a condition where the middle of her ear is inflamed. Since her left ear drum is perforated, “Sina has recurrent discharge from her ear,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), reports. “She has been dealing with this for six years and it causes her constant discomfort and hearing loss,” CSC continues. “Sina is a university student and the youngest of four sisters, and in her free time she enjoys drawing pictures and reading books.” Sina needs a myringoplasty for $399 -- a surgical procedure to close the perforation of her eardrum. With surgery, "Sina will no longer have discharge from her left ear and her hearing will slowly return," says CSC. Sina’s younger sister says she is worried about Sina “because she cannot hear the teachers clearly, even if she sits at the front of the room.” With this treatment Sina will be able to continue at school with improved hearing.

"Wendy is 10 years old," Dr. Rohloff continues. "Since 2003, she has had severe joint pain and swelling, in almost all joints of her body. She can't move her hands, knees, or neck. She is in constant pain. She has a condition called juvenile idiopathic arthritis which is devastating her quality of life, keeping her from attending school, and causing an enormous financial strain on her family. She's received intermittent care, but she and her family can't always afford the care, and so she's started and stopped treatment many times. She needs an advocate who can intensively monitor and treat her symptoms." For $1,200, we can fund immunosuppressive therapy to improve Wendy's symptoms and allow her to resume school. "Wendy is a really delightful child who gave me a big smile today, despite being in severe pain. Her mother is at her wits end, and also economically exhausted. Meet Sey Ha, a dedicated father and husband from Cambodia. Sey Ha has two daughters and one son. He and his wife work on a rice farm, but he has not been able to help since his accident a couple of months ago. Sey Ha fell, putting all of his weight on his hand to break the fall, and dislocated his elbow. Due to the pain, he has been unable to return to work with his wife. A $300 operation will fix Sey Ha's elbow, restoring mobility and decreasing his pain. He told our medical partner that he really wants to get back to work so he can support his family - let's help him do that!

Elisha is a two-year-old boy from Tanzania who was born with a rare condition that makes it impossible for him to pass stool normally. As a result, Elisha requires a lot of care and attention and is unable to develop normally. Elisha's parents are doing their best to care for him, but as casual laborers earning very little money, they find it difficult to provide Elisha with the medical attention he needs to overcome his condition. His father told our medical partner, "I just pray that something can be done to help my boy be normal and grow like other children." For $1200, Elisha will undergo surgery to correct his condition and create a healthy anal opening for him. This operation will allow Elisha to fall into a normal routine. This will open so many doors for him - starting with allowing him to go to school with other kids and follow a normal development path. Levis is a toddler who is about to celebrate his third birthday! He lives with his mother and grandparents in Kenya, where his mother works as a casual laborer to support the family. Levis was born with hypospadias, a condition in which the urethra is malformed and makes it impossible for him to pass urine properly. If Levis' condition is left untreated, his doctors worry that he will be at risk for infertility and social isolation when he grows up. Levis' grandmother has sought medical attention for him since his birth. She tells his doctors that it breaks her heart that it has taken this long to find help, and that she is hopeful that her grandson can grow up to live a happy adult life. For $1,200, we can pay for Levis to undergo surgery to repair his malformation and return his reproductive system to working order, allowing him to live a healthy and dignified life.

Pisey is an exuberant four-year-old girl from Cambodia. When Pisey was one, she accidentally crawled into a cooking fire and severely burned her hand. Since then, scar tissue has accumulated and her skin has tightened around the burn site, greatly limiting her ability to use her hand. Pisey loves to play and have fun. The surgeons at Children's Surgical Centre believe they can help Pisey by releasing the tension in her skin and replacing the unhealthy skin on her hand with a healthy skin graft. This treatment will greatly improve her ability to open and close her hand. Pisey's surgery costs only $300, but her family cannot afford to pay for it.
