Meet Vutha, a 46-year-old man from Cambodia. “Vutha is married with 3 daughters and works as a policeman. He enjoys watching boxing on TV and reading the newspaper in his free time,” describes our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). “Vutha developed a cataract in each eye nine years ago. This causes him blurred vision, tearing, and cloudy lenses. He can't see everything clearly, do work well, or go anywhere outside,” explains CSC. $225 funds cataract surgery that will remove the cloudy lenses from both of his eyes and replace them with artificial lenses. Funding for his surgery includes post-operative care, and after the surgery, he will be able to see clearly again.

"Phon developed a cataract in each eye three months ago," our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us about the 53-year-old man from Cambodia. "This causes him blurred vision, tearing, and discharge." Cataracts occur when the eye lens becomes cloudy, making it very difficult to see. If not treated, cataracts can lead to functional blindness over time. Fortunately, a simple and commonly practiced procedure can restore Phon's vision. $225 will cover the cost of a phaco procedure and IOL implants for each eye. The procedure involves removing the cloudy lenses and replacing them with clear implants. After surgery, "Phon will be able to see clearly again," CSC explains. As a rice farmer and father of five, it's important to Phon and his wife that he gets his vision back and is able to work again. "I want to find another job as a motor taxi driver to earn some money to support my family," Phon tells us of his plans for after surgery.

Meet Patrick, a 42-year-old father and the caretaker of the health center of our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Patrick is the sole provider of his family in Kenya, and cares for five children with two in secondary school. In order to raise money for public transportation to AMHF’s centre, Patrick began selling tress. “However, a tree fell on him, injuring his head and arm,” explains AMHF. The accident fractured his radial and ulna. Now, he cannot feel his right arm and is at risk of infection if he does not receive medical treatment soon. $1410 in funding will allow Patrick to receive diagnostic x-rays, physical therapy, a resetting cast for his hand, and recovery time at the centre. “Treatment will eliminate pain and numbness in Patrick’s hand," AMHF shares. "Possibility of further infections will be limited. Once recovered, Patrick will be able to use his hand and work again.” Let support Patrick in getting the care he needs to get well and support his family.

Saroeun is active nine-year-old boy who loves to play in the forest with his friends, eat fresh fruit, and hang out by the river. Saroeun was born with a tumor on his lip. A few months ago, Saroeun became ill and his tumor became infected. Because Saroeun and his family live in a remote region of Laos, they had to travel 14 hours by bus to the nearest clinic. Saroeun is experiencing pain and is having trouble eating. His doctors say he needs a tumor excision to "improve mouth function, eliminate infection, and prevent subsequent problems associated with infection." Children's Surgical Centre is requesting $300 for the procedure. Let's help Saroeun remove this tumor so he can enjoy playing with his friends and eating fresh fruit again!

Meet U Phar, a 67-year-old man living in an isolated part of Burma which has been in conflict for years and is neglected by the military government. Because of this, U Phar never used the government health system and has never been to a clinic or hospital in his life. In September, U Phar became ill with a kidney stone and a resulting obstruction in his kidney called hydronephrosis. If left untreated, these could result in permanent kidney damage. Luckily, U Phar met a medic in his village who referred him to our medical partner in Burma. U Phar never went to school and so cannot read or write. He makes his living as a tenant farmer with his wife but he has been unable to work with his current condition. They use what they grow to feed themselves, and his son and daughter cut down trees in the jungle to produce charcoal to sell. U Phar has seven children, five who are married and living on their own.
