Meet 25-year-old Maureen, an expecting mother from Kenya. "Maureen is a jovial mother of three children, two girls and one boy," Lwala Community Alliance tells us. "She is married to a farmer who plants sugarcane in small scale that they sometimes sell to the locals who do the sugarcane milling to pay their children's school fees and also to buy food for their family." As she prepares to welcome her fourth child, Maureen is concerned about having a safe delivery. Many women in her community die or lose their babies during childbirth. “When Um's eyesight was better she liked watching the news on TV,” shares our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Meet 74-year-old Um! Um lives with her family in Cambodia and enjoys taking care of her nine grandchildren. “Um began losing her eyesight three years ago,” explains CSC. Um has a hypermature cataract in her left eye, a condition that blurs her vision and has made it impossible for her to work on her rice farm with her children. After traveling for six hours on poor roads with her daughter to reach our medical partner, Um remains hopeful that her eyesight will improve with cataract surgery.
