Meet Poe. He is a seven-year-old boy from Burma who loves to play with his friends and wants to be a doctor when he grows up. About a year ago, Poe's arm was badly burned in an accident. His parents told our medical partner that Poe was very brave after his accident and tried not to cry, even though he was in immense pain. Now, Poe has a hard time sleeping because of discomfort caused by residual scar tissue. The damaged skin on his arm has hardened and tightened, rendering it mostly immobile. He is shy about going outside, and has a hard time doing active things like playing with his friends and participating in festivals. With our support, Poe can receive the surgery he needs to regain mobility in his arm and reduce his discomfort. $1,500 will enable our partner, Burma Border Projects, to provide Poe with the care he needs to have the future he deserves!

Crecencia is a vibrant woman from Guatemala with locally advanced cervical cancer. Crecencia's tumor is so large that it cannot be removed - it must be targeted with external beam radiation therapy. If Crecencia is not treated immediately, there is a high chance the cancer will kill her. Crecencia's husband passed away from a chronic illness. Even more tragically, four of her five children were recently killed in an car accident. Crecencia is left with her youngest child and limited family support. She cannot afford treatment on her own. Crecencia's doctor writes us, "Crecencia understands that the tumor is large and that the cancer may not be 100% curable. However, her greatest desire is to gain a few more years of life so that her young child, who is two years old, can grow up with the support of his mother and make it into school." Our Medical Partner also notes that "the cost of this treatment is higher than usual because the public access radiation machine is broken. We've negotiated a steep discount with a private clinic to get this treatment done." For $3,000, we can fund Crecencia’s radiation therapy and give her the chance every mom deserves to help her son through his early life.

Emily and her husband are farmers. They sell maize and sugar cane to support their family. Emily says she dreams of starting her own business to make sure she earns enough money to send her children to school, but that for now they are "living well." A few months ago, Emily found out she was going to have a baby. She began experiencing dizziness, and wanted to make sure she understood warning signs well enough to have a safe pregnancy. Emily lives in Kenya, where access to high-quality maternal healthcare can be scarce, but luckily she was connected with Lwala Community Alliance. For $215, Lwala can provide Emily with pre-natal care, safe delivery in a hospital, and a post-natal checkup for her and her baby. They will also teach her about nutrition, how to prepare a birth plan, and how to save money for when the baby is born.

Quinter is half-way through her pregnancy and her fourth child is due to be born in the middle of this year. Like so many Kenyans, Quinter and her family are farmers, growing corn and sugar cane to sell for a tiny income to support their family. Quinter has 3 healthy children and she hopes that her fourth baby will be the same way. Quinter is experiencing chronic nausea and abdominal pain associated with her pregnancy and she cannot afford the professional help or medications that could ease her discomfort. For just $215, the Lwala hospital can provide Quinter with pre-natal care, a safe delivery for her baby and post-natal checkups for her and her child.

In the email introducing us to her, our Medical Partner says, “Angel is as her name suggests, an angel, beautiful and bright eyed.” Angel has a big personality. She lives with her mother and her two siblings, and she says she wants to be a tailor when she grows up. Angel’s bright future is threatened, however, by an awful accident. When Angel was eight months old, her mother left her with her father while she went out to buy ingredients for dinner. Angel’s father wasn’t paying attention, and while Angel was playing, a kerosene lamp fell on her bed. Angel’s mother came home to find her young daughter’s feet on fire. She immediately covered them in a blanket and rushed her to the hospital, where Angel received first aid. However, her mother couldn’t afford any medical care beyond what she had already received. Five years later, simply because she was born into a community where the average income is less than $2 a day and she was unable to access proper medical care, Angel's burns have developed into scar contractures that make it impossible for her to walk. Doctors at African Mission Healthcare Foundation believe that with contracture release surgery, Angel will regain normal use of her feet. We need to raise the $1500 it will take to cover the cost of Angel’s surgery so that, despite this accident, she is able to live a normal life.
